The Charlotte Hornets will move on from general manager Rich Cho.

The team announced on Tuesday that they will not be extending Cho's contract after this season, confirming an earlier report by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Wojnarowski reported that the club will pursue former Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak to fill the role.

“I want to thank Rich for all of his hard work with the Charlotte Hornets organization through the years and wish him and his family the best in the future,” Hornets owner Michael Jordan said in a statement. “Rich worked tirelessly on behalf of our team and instituted a number of management tools that have benefited our organization. We are deeply committed to our fans and to the city of Charlotte to provide a consistent winner on the court. The search will now begin for our next head of basketball operations who will help us achieve that goal.”

Cho has served as GM of the Hornets since 2011 when the club was still the Bobcats, having previous served in the same role with the Seattle SuperSonics and Portland Trail Blazers. Under Cho, the team has reached the postseason on two occasions in 2014 and 2016. The team currently trails the Miami Heat by five and a half games for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

“It’s been a privilege to serve as the Charlotte Hornets’ General Manager for the past seven years,” Cho said in a statement. “I want to thank Michael Jordan, Curtis Polk, and the entire organization for giving me that opportunity, and for their support since that moment. I also want to thank the basketball and business operations staffs, Head Coach Steve Clifford and his staff, and our players for their commitment to excellence and success. Charlotte is a special city with deeply loyal fans and I will always be grateful for my experience with the franchise.”

Kupchak was let go by the Lakers almost exactly a year ago after 17 years in the role with the team in the middle of its leanest years in recent memory.

A former player who won three NBA titles (one with the Washington Bullets and two with the Lakers), Kupchak had been in the Lakers front office since 1986 and served under Jerry West. Under Kupchak, the Lakers reached four NBA Finals, winning two of them in 2009 and 2010. Kupchak was responsible for the trade of Shaquille O'Neal to the Heat and the high-profile acquisitions of Pau Gasol, Dwight Howard and Steve Nash.

Wojnarowski notes that Jordan's plan would be to partner Kupchak with current Hornets assistant GM Buzz Peterson.
