Toronto Maple Leafs

With centre Auston Matthews absent from practice with an upper-body injury, William Nylander shifted to centre on a line with Zach Hyman and Connor Brown during Friday's practice. Head coach Mike Babcock confirmed he will play there Saturday against the Boston Bruins.

"And if things go good Willie's just going to stay there," Babcock said.

Kasperi Kapanen moved up from the third line to skate on the wing beside Tyler Bozak and James van Riemsdyk, while Josh Leivo took Kapanen's spot on the fourth line as the practised three-on-three.

After practice, Leafs head coach Mike Babcock said he wasn't sure which forward would draw in with Matthews set to miss Saturday's game.

"I haven’t decided who is going in, Marty or Leivs," Babcock said. "We’ll look at that today and decide based on the pre-scout of Boston. We’ll see what can help us the best. Whoever gets in, you just have to grab it and you play real well."

Matthews is set to undergo an MRI on Friday for what is believed to be a shoulder injury. He left Thursday's shootout win over the New York Islanders late in the third period and did not return.

Matthews is officially considered day-to-day, though Babcock said he would be "out for a bit."

Montreal Canadiens

Montreal Canadiens centre Phillip Danault missed practice Friday morning for a therapy day, the team announced.

Danault returned earlier this week against the Philadelphia Flyers. He missed over a month after taking a Zdeno Chara slapshot to the head.

In 45 games this season, the 24-year-old has eight goals and 16 assists.

Logan Shaw, Andrew Shaw and Ales Hemsky all practised in non-contact jerseys. Head coach Claude Julien later confirmed that neither A. Shaw or Hemsky will play Saturday against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
