CLEVELAND - Cleveland Indians catcher Roberto Perez will have surgery on his fractured right thumb on Friday.

Perez was injured while tagging a runner at the plate Saturday against Philadelphia. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list the following day when X-rays revealed the fracture.

Dr. Thomas Graham will perform the surgery, after which a timetable on how long Perez is excepted to be out will be announced.

Perez is hitless in eight at-bats and has drawn six walks in four games. He batted .228 with seven homers and 21 RBIs in 70 games last season.

Cleveland acquired Chris Gimenez from Texas for cash considerations on Wednesday to back up Yan Gomes behind the plate.
