Mathew Barzal’s standout rookie season wasn't enough to earn the New York Islanders a spot in the playoffs, but it was enough to him a spot at the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.

Barzal told Newsday's Andrew Gross on Tuesday he will play for Team Canada at the worlds next month, representing his country for the first time at a non-age restricted event.

The Calder Trophy favourite has 20 goals and 79 points in 79 games with the Islanders this season.

He last wore the Maple Leaf while playing for Canada at the 2017 World Juniors, where the team won silver.

The 20-year-old told Gross he's excited in particular to play on a team with Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid. McDavid has not confirmed he will play at the worlds, but Oilers teammate Oscar Klefbom said last month he will be there.

Barzal joins Buffalo Sabres forward Ryan O'Reilly as confirmed participants for Canada.

The tournament will run from May 4-20 in Denmark.
