RALEIGH, N.C. - Jordan Staal helped the Carolina Hurricanes stay nearly unbeatable agains the Ottawa Senators.

Staal set up Jeff Skinner's tying goal with 3.3 seconds left in regulation, then scored with game-winner at 2:51 of overtime to give the Hurricanes a 3-2 victory over the Senators on Saturday night.

Carolina improved to 12-0-2 in its last 14 home games against Ottawa.

"We kept at it and kept at it, and we were fortunate enough to get rewarded at the end," said Staal, who has scored a goal in three straight games. "Skinny had a huge goal for us. It was great to see him get a big one. We were desperate. We had a few lapses in the second (period) and may have had a little lull, but we were there to win the game."

Justin Faulk also scored and Cam Ward stopped 19 shots for the Hurricanes.

"I thought we were good for the most part tonight," Carolina coach Bill Peters said. "We needed to be a desperate team and we were."

Alex Chiasson and Chris Wideman had goals for Ottawa, and Andrew Hammond finished with 43 saves.

"You've got to play hockey all the way through," Ottawa coach Dave Cameron said. "You've got to execute. You've got to do everything for 60 minutes. Frustrating is a good word to describe tonight."

Carolina outshot Ottawa 14-7 in a scoreless and penalty-free first period.

Faulk woke up the crowd with his fifth power-play goal of the season at 4:21 of the second, beating Hammond stick-side from the high slot 4 seconds after Victor Rask won a faceoff in the left circle.

Chiasson tied the score on a power-play rush with 8:23 left in the period, taking a perfect centring pass from Patrick Wiercioch and easily beating Ward glove-side from the doorstep.

Wideman then put the Senators ahead with his first career goal with 4:01 to go in the second, beating Ward on a tough angle from the goalie's left with Mika Zibanejad on the centring pass.

And then Skinner kept the Hurricanes from a loss.

"Their goalie was in good position and made a lot of saves," Skinner said. "It was nice to get one there to send it to OT, and then Jordo finished it off. It's a pretty good win. On the 3-on-3 we've got some guys that can hang around the puck, and the more you can possess it the better chance you have."
