TORONTO - The Toronto Blue Jays have recalled infielder Ryan Goins from triple-A Buffalo and designated right-hander Todd Redmond for assignment.

The moves, announced before Thursday night's home game against Tampa Bay, allowed the Blue Jays to get down to a seven-man bullpen while adding some depth to the bench at the same time.

"We've been saying all along we want to get down to seven ... and to get Goins back here, he's going to help us," said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons.

Goins had a .350 batting average in six games this season for triple-A Buffalo. The 27-year-old second baseman is an outstanding defender but he's not as strong with the bat.

He spent parts of the last two seasons in Toronto and posted a .213 average with three homers and 23 RBIs. Goins will likely join infielder Steve Tolleson in a backup role and see action as a defensive replacement as needed.

"He's kind of like a super-utility guy," Gibbons said.

Redmond, 29, struggled in his two appearances this season after a solid 2014 campaign when he was primarily used as a long reliever. He made 42 appearances out of the bullpen last year, going 1-4 with a 3.24 earned-run average.

Redmond, who made his big-league debut with the Cincinnati Reds in 2012, was 4-3 with a 4.32 ERA in 17 appearances (14 starts) with the Blue Jays in 2013.

He allowed eight earned runs in 4 1/3 innings of work this season.

"He wasn't particularly sharp in either one of (his appearances), but everything wasn't based necessarily off that," Gibbons said. "Reds has done a great job for us in the year and a half he's been here. I don't know if (another team) is going to pick him up or not.

"I hope he passes through but I know for his career's sake, he hopes he gets grabbed. But there's a place for him."

If Redmond is eventually outrighted to Buffalo, Gibbons said it's possible he'll be worked into the rotation with the Bisons.

"He's a good dude, you know," Gibbons said. "He's one of those guys you pull for."

Goins joined the team in time for the finale of the four-game series against the Rays.

Also Thursday, the Blue Jays announced that second baseman Devon Travis was credited with a three-run double in a 10-7 victory over Baltimore on April 12. Orioles right-fielder Travis Snider was originally given an error on the play but the call was overturned by review.

The Rays announced that they have signed former Blue Jays catcher J.P. Arencibia to a minor-league deal. He was recently released by the Orioles.

Arencibia, who played 62 games last year for the Texas Rangers, had 23 homers and 78 RBIs for the Blue Jays in 2011.
