Lefty J.A. Happ will be the Toronto Blue Jays’ opening day starter when the team takes to the field on March 29 at the Rogers Centre to host the New York Yankees, manager John Gibbons announced on Tuesday.

Happ, 35, is the Jays’ fifth different opening day starter in the past five seasons.

Happ will be followed in the rotation by Aaron Sanchez, Marco Estrada, Marcus Stroman and Jaime Garcia.

A native of Peru, IL, Happ was 10-11 in 25 starts last year with an earned run average of 3.53 and a 1.314 WHIP over 145.1 innings pitched.

In 2016, Happ went 20-4 and finished sixth in American League Cy Young Award balloting. He became only the sixth Jay to hit the 20-win plateau behind Roy Halladay, Roger Clemens, Pat Hentgen, Jack Morris and David Wells.

Happ is entering the final season of a three-year, $36 million pact and will be a free agent at season’s end.

The Yankees will counter with Luis Severino (14-6, 2.98 ERA and 1.040 WHIP in 2017), who was confirmed as opening day starter on Saturday.
