Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love is the latest athlete to reveal his struggles with mental illness and he credits the openness of Toronto Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan with making it easier for him to share his story.

In an article published in The Players’ Tribune on Tuesday, Love said that knowing someone he’s competed against was dealing with the same issue made him realize he wasn’t alone.

“One of the reasons I wanted to write this comes from reading DeMar’s comments last week about depression,” Love wrote in The Players’ Tribune.  “I’ve played against DeMar for years, but I never could’ve guessed that he was struggling with anything. It really makes you think about how we are all walking around with experiences and struggles — all kinds of things — and we sometimes think we’re the only ones going through them.”

In the piece, Love talks about a panic attack he suffered during a November 5 game against the Atlanta Hawks, where family issues, lack of sleep and the team’s rough start to the season overwhelmed him to the point that he had to go back into the locker room during the third quarter of the game to try to calm down.

“Just by sharing what he shared, DeMar probably helped some people — and maybe a lot more people than we know — feel like they aren’t crazy or weird to be struggling with depression.”

DeRozan tweeted and then opened up to the Toronto Star about dealing with depression in mid- February.

“It’s one of them things that no matter how indestructible we look like we are, we’re all human at the end of the day,” DeRozan told the Toronto Star. “We all got feelings ... all of that. Sometimes ... it gets the best of you, where times everything in the whole world’s on top of you.”

LeBron James tweeted his support for his teammate Love on Tuesday.
