UTICA, N.Y. — Adam Brooks had the short-handed winner with 1:25 left to play as the Toronto Marlies edged the Utica Comets 2-1 on Friday in American Hockey League action.
Toronto clinched a playoff berth for the eight straight year with the victory.
Mason Marchment had a power-play goal for the Marlies (38-23-11), the AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Kasimir Kaskisuo made 23 saves for the win.
Brendan Woods replied for Utica (31-32-8), the minor league club of the Vancouver Canucks, at the 10:07 mark of the third period.
Michael Leighton started in net for the Comets, stopping all 14 shots he faced in the first 35:36 of play. He was relieved by Marek Mazanec, who turned aside 5-of-7 shots.
Toronto was 1 for 4 on the power play and Utica went 0 for 6 with the man advantage.
