VAIL, Colo. — Canadian Mark McMorris became the first snowboarder to win the Burton U.S. Open slopestyle title in back-to-back years, scoring 88.1 points on his final run Friday.

The Regina native fell on his first two runs of finals, including a hard slam to the ribs in his second before stomping his final run.

McMorris landed a frontside triple cork 1440 and backside triple cork 1440 on his third run to take home gold for the second year in a row.

"All the work is definitely paying off today," McMorris said. "There's so many people I want to thank for helping me get back to being able to do this. I'm snowboarding every day and at the level I want to be. This brings me the ultimate joy being able to ride to the best of my ability on a day that it matters."

McMorris is coming off a bronze-medal performance in slopestyle at the Pyeongchang Olympics.

The women's slopestyle final was cancelled due to high winds. The semifinal rankings determined the event ranking, with the Brooke Voigt of Fort McMurray, Alta., finishing 12th.
