ATLANTA — New York Mets second baseman Neil Walker has had season-ending surgery to repair a herniated disk.

The Mets said Friday that Walker had a successful lumbar microdiscectomy a day earlier at New York's Hospital for Special Surgery. Walker announced on Sept. 1 that he would need the surgery.

Despite playing in only 113 games, Walker matched his career high with 23 home runs this season while batting .282 with 55 RBIs.

The Mets acquired Walker from Pittsburgh for left-hander Jonathon Niese on Dec. 9. The switch-hitter, who turns 31 on Saturday, can become a free agent following the season.
