NEW YORK, N.Y. - For the second straight season, the New York Mets' closer didn't make it past opening day.

Jenrry Mejia was put on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday because of inflammation in the back of his elbow. He was examined by Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek, underwent X-ray and MRI scans and was given a cortisone injection.

New York said Mejia won't be available to pitch in a game for at least 10 days and was put on the DL retroactive to Sunday. Right-hander Erik Goeddel will be recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League before Wednesday night's game at Washington.

Mejia was supposed to enter in the ninth inning Monday of what became a 3-1 victory over the Nationals. But the right-hander felt a problem in the bullpen, and Jerry Blevins relieved and retired Bryce Harper on a flyout leading off the ninth. Buddy Carlyle retired two batters for his first career save.

Mejia, who had Tommy John surgery on his elbow in 2011, went 6-6 with 28 saves last season. Manager Terry Collins said Jeurys Familia might step into the closer role.

Last year, Mets closer Bobby Parnell blew a save on opening day against Washington and was out for the rest of the season after Tommy John surgery.
