INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Nathan Peterman threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Marcell Ateman in the fourth quarter and the Las Vegas Raiders held on to defeat the Los Angeles Rams 17-16 on Saturday night.

Bryce Perkins threw a 2-yard touchdown to Jacob Harris with 15 seconds remaining, but his pass intended for Harris on the 2-point conversion that could have won the game was incomplete.

Peterman was 16 of 24 for 172 yards with two interceptions and added 36 yards rushing. He took advantage of a busted coverage to find Ateman all alone on a double move with 6:58 remaining to engineer his second straight preseason win.

Perkins was 26 of 39 for 208 yards, two touchdowns and one interception as he played the whole game for the Rams, but their standout player was linebacker Chris Garrett after he dominated the second quarter.

Garrett, a seventh-round draft pick from Division II Concordia St. Paul, tipped Peterman’s pass at the line of scrimmage to result in an easy interception for safety J.R. Reed. That takeaway set up a four-play, 40-yard drive that finished off with Perkins finding Kendall Blanton for a 9-yard touchdown pass.

The Rams do not have many proven options at outside linebacker behind Leonard Floyd, but the 6-foot-4, 245-pound Garrett has looked like another late-round find for Los Angeles through two preseason games. He came back after helping force the turnover with a tackle for loss on the Raiders’ next play from scrimmage before shutting down the drive by splitting a sack with Jonah Williams, batting down a pass by Peterman, and getting a strip-sack on three straight plays.

The Raiders started their top two draft picks: right tackle Alex Leatherwood and safety Tre’von Moehrig. Leatherwood was impressive at the goal line, pushing defenders back well into the end zone on consecutive run plays.

TAKE A SEAT

Rams coach Sean McVay continued to hold out nearly all of his starters and significant contributors. Matthew Stafford and Aaron Donald headlined the large contingent of Los Angeles players that were not in uniform.

The Raiders chose to have their first stringers go through warmups before most called it a night. However, LB Nicholas Morrow and OL Richie Incognito did not dress at all after sustaining injuries Thursday during the second of two days of joint practices with the Rams.

DOING MORE

Rams kicker Matt Gay also handled punting duties after Johnny Hekker and Corey Bojorquez were placed on the COVID-19 list earlier Saturday. Gay, the only specialist dressed for the game, averaged 42 yards per punt on four attempts. He made a 36-yard field goal in the second quarter, but his 43-yard attempt in the fourth quarter was blocked by Darius Philon.

ODDS AND ENDS

Raiders LB Javin White, DE Malcolm Koonce and Rams LT Tremayne Anchrum Jr. were all injured on the same play early in the third quarter. White sustained a knee injury that left him unable to put any weight on his left leg. ... Rams RB Raymond Calais sustained an ankle injury in the third quarter. ... Raiders RB Trey Ragas scored on a short run midway through the first quarter, diving into the end zone on fourth down from the 1.
