Diggs, 27, is in his sixth NFL season out of Alabama. He had appeared in eight games for the Cowboys this season, recording 25 tackles.
Earlier on Wednesday, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer addressed Diggs’s release.
“It was a culmination of multiple factors‚” he told the team’s website. “Performance, other elements. He’s been an incredible player for this organization, and I really do, I truly do like Trevon a lot. I wish him nothing but the best, and I’m excited to see where he lands and watch him continue his career.”
After the team’s Christmas Day win over the Washington Commanders, Diggs reportedly skipped team’s flight back to Dallas after having being denied the request to remain in the area. Diggs is from nearby Gaithersburg, MD.
“It was one of many factors, it was not the only factor,” Schottenheimer said of the skipped flight. “I’m not the Grinch that stole Christmas. I love Christmas. I love my family. But at the end of the day, we have a protocol that we go through, and the process was not followed.”
The younger brother of New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs, Diggs has appeared in 66 career games, recording 240 tackles and 20 interceptions including two for pick-sixes.
The Packers (9-6-1) are locked in as the NFC’s seventh seed. They wrap up their regular season on Sunday with a visit to the Minnesota Vikings (8-8).
