Amanda Nunes has successfully defended the bantamweight championship twice and on May 12th she’ll try to add a third to her resume when she puts the gold on the line against Raquel Pennington in the main event of UFC 224.

Nunes defeated Valentina Shevchenko via unanimous decision last September at UFC 215 in Edmonton to retain the belt for the second time.  She also scored a first round TKO over Ronda Rousey in December of 2016 in her first title defence.

The 29-year-old captured the belt at UFC 200 with a first round victory over Miesha Tate in the main event of the marquee card.

Pennington enters her first UFC title match on a four fight winning streak, most recently with a victory over Tate at UFC 205.  She has also beaten Elizabeth Phillips, Bethe Correia and Jessica Andrade during the streak.

In October of 2017 Pennington suffered a severe leg injury in an ATV accident during a hunting trip, putting a planned December fight against Nunes on hold.

The event will take place in Rio de Janeiro at the Jeunesse Arena and will also feature previously announced bouts between Vitor Belfort and Lyoto Machida and Jacare Souza and Kelvin Gastelum.
