The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenceman Jack Johnson and forward Matt Cullen.

The 31-year-old Johnson tied a career-low with 11 points this past season with the Columbus Blue Jackets while average his time on ice sat below 20 minutes (19:33) for the first time in his career.

Johnson requested a trade this season from the Blue Jackets as he looked to move to a team to secure his financial future. The Blue Jackets wound up holding on to the defensive blueline and, after he served as a healthy scratch in the playoffs, there seemed to be little doubt he will sign elsewhere on July 1.

The 31-year-old entered the league as third overall pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in 2005. A veteran of 788 games, Johnson has 66 goals and 278 points in his NHL career.

Johnson joins a Penguins blue line that includes Kris Letang, Justin Schultz, Brian Dumoulin, Olli Maatta, Chad Ruhwedel and Jamie Oleksiak, who is a restricted free agent. Pittsburgh cleared cap space for the move earlier this week by moving Matt Hunwick and Conor Sheary to the Buffalo Sabres for a conditional draft pick.

A three-time Stanley Cup champion (2006, 2016, 2017), Cullen had 11 goals and 11 assists over 79 games with the Minnesota Wild in 2017-2018. He also added one goal and one assist during the Wild’s first round series against the Winnipeg Jets.

The Minnesota native was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in 1996 as a second-round pick. Since then, the 41-year-old has played for the Florida Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes, New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators, Nashville Predators, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Minnesota.

He won his first Cup with the Canes in 2006 and back-to-back Cups a decade later with the Pens in 2016 and 2017.

Over the course of his 20-year career, Cullen has registered 259 goals and 452 assists through 1,445 career games.

Cullen is coming off a one-year, $1.7 million contract he signed last August and signed for one year with the Penguins
