PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed Swedish defenceman Niclas Andersen to a one-year contract.

The 27-year-old Andersen was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 2006 but never signed with the club. Andersen has spent his entire professional career playing exclusively in Europe, most recently with Brynas of the Swedish Hockey League.

The deal, announced Monday, allows the Penguins to assign Andersen to the AHL if he fails to make the NHL squad out of training camp.

Andersen had five goals and 17 assists for Brynas in 2014-15, career highs in both categories.
