Carolina Hurricanes head coach Bill Peters is believed to be Team Canada's bench boss for the upcoming world hockey championship in Denmark, according to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger.

Peters, 53, has a 35-34-11 record with the Hurricanes this season. He is in his fourth season as head coach of the Hurricanes and has never reached the postseason with the team.

The 53-year-old is under contract with the Hurricanes through next season, though his future remains unknown as he owns an opt-out clause to walk away this summer. Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon recently gave Peters a vote of confidence.

Canada fell to Sweden in last year's gold-medal game, but won gold the previous two years.

Buffalo Sabres forward Ryan O'Reilly and New York Islanders standout Mathew Barzal have confirmed they will attend the tournament. Carey Price and Brendan Gallagher of the Montreal Canadiens, along with Matt Duchene of the Ottawa Senators and Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks have all stated they will not attend.

Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has not publicly confirmed he will play, but is expected to.

The tournament starts on May 4.
