Andrea’s Story

“The traumatic events of Andrea’s patient journey began when she was only eight weeks old,” recalls Andrea’s father, Bill. “It was heart-wrenching to watch my daughter go through her medical challenges starting at such a young age.”

A native of Waterdown, Andrea was diagnosed with a rare liver disease called biliary atresia and she required emergency surgery at McMaster Children’s Hospital to prevent serious liver damage from blocked bile ducts.

“I was poked for blood work or IV almost 400 hundred times by the time I was five years old,” explains Andrea. “I had four more liver surgeries, averaging between 15 and 28 hours each.”

Throughout the difficult times, Bill and Andrea were grateful for the expertise and care of the specialists at McMaster Children’s Hospital, some of whom are still friends to this day.

“It was a very scary and overwhelming experience for us,” says Bill. “The Hospital became a comfort zone for us and the team became our support network. We relied on them for clarification, advice and reassurance, and it was comforting to know that they were always there for us.”

Following her surgeries, Andrea had many hospital stays for various liver-related complications and she continues to be monitored for her condition. Today, Andrea is doing well and her long-term prognosis is positive.

“I cannot say thank you enough to the doctors, nurses and staff at McMaster Children’s Hospital for their remarkable care and compassion,” she says.
