DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings put goalie Jimmy Howard on injured reserve Sunday after he was carted off the ice during Saturday night's game at Washington.

Howard has a groin injury. The Red Wings called up goalie Tom McCollum on Sunday from Grand Rapids of the AHL.

General manager Ken Holland said the team thinks Howard will be out until the All-Star break, but that is pending an ultrasound Monday — and depends on how the goaltender feels in a few days.

The 25-year-old McCollum has appeared in 21 games for Grand Rapids this season, going 10-8-3 with a 2.33 goals-against average and a 0.911 save percentage. He has won his last five starts.

Howard was hurt attempting to make a save on Troy Brouwer's goal in the first period. After Washington dumped the puck in, Howard stopped it behind the net and started back around front, but Brouwer got to the puck first. Howard — coming from the left — stretched trying to make the save.
