The World Series champion Houston Astros have locked up their superstar second baseman Jose Altuve to a five-year, $151 million extension, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Altuve is signed through the 2019 season so this new contract won't kick in until 2020.

The 27-year-old had a career season in 2017, hitting .346 with 24 home runs and 81 RBIs over 153 games. Altuve also had an on-base percentage of .410 with 32 stolen bases.

The American League MVP is a five-time All-Star and was a key part of Houston's run to the World Series title last year.

The Venezuelan has a career batting average of .316 with 84 homers and 403 RBIs over 982 games.
