With LeBron James potentially becoming eligible for free agency in a couple of weeks, the Cleveland Cavaliers are apparently getting in on the Kawhi Leonard trade talks.

According to Terry Pluto of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland is one of several teams making calls to the San Antonio Spurs about Leonard. Pluto points to five-time all-star Kevin Love as being good trade bait in general, but doesn't think a one-for-one deal of Love/Leonard would interest the Spurs much.

Acquiring Leonard, who is arguably a superstar when healthy, would go a long way in helping the Cavaliers’ hopes of holding on to James. The 33-year-old James can opt out of his contract for the 2018-19 season and become an unrestricted free agent come July 1.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski‏ reports that Leonard wants to play in his native Los Angeles - preferably for the Lakers - but of course the Spurs are not obligated to deal him there. Wojnarowski‏’s ESPN colleague, Chris Haynes, first reported that Leonard “wants out of San Antonio”. Per Haynes' sources, Leonard “has grown frustrated with how the organization handled his quad injury and feels the franchise turned on him once he sought a second opinion." Leonard played in just nine regular-season games for the Spurs in 2017-18 and did not play in the postseason either.

The 26-year-old Leonard, who has made the All-NBA First Team twice in his seven seasons, owns career numbers of 16.3 points per game and 6.2 rebounds. Among his numerous career accolades are two Defensive Player of the Year awards and a Finals MVP, for when Leonard helped the Spurs win the NBA title in 2014.
