In the midst of a career season, Alex Chiasson has informed the Edmonton Oilers of his desire to re-sign with the team, Rob Tychkowski‏ of the Edmonton Sun reports.

Chiasson is set to become an unrestricted free agent in July and carries a $650,000 cap hit on the one-year he signed with the club in October.

The 28-year-old has a career-high 17 goals through 43 games this season and is on pace to post a career-high 42 points on the season.

Chiasson has played on four teams over the past four seasons, and has already topped the 24-point mark for the first time since 2014-15, when he was with the Ottawa Senators. He is also averaging a career-high 16:29 of ice time per game with the Oilers.

He is one of five pending unrestricted free agents on the Oilers, who currently have Keith Gretzky acting as interim general manager.

After signing goaltender Mikko Koskinen to an extension last month, the Oilers are currently projected to have $8.5 million in cap space next season if the cap stays at $79.5 million, per CapFriendly. The team also has four pending restricted free agents.

The Oilers have lost five straight games entering Tuesday's matchup with the Chicago Blackhawks and sit three points back of the Vancouver Canucks for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
