The Arizona Coyotes appear set to have a second defenceman sign a contract extension when he becomes eligible on July 1.

According to Craig Morgan of Arizona Sports 98.7, Niklas Hjalmarsson has agreed in principle to a two-year extension with the club.

Hjalmarsson is expected to join Oliver Ekman-Larsson as blueliners to sign extensions with the club on July 1, with Ekman-Larsson agreeing to an eight-year, $64 million deal. Both players were slated to become free agents in 2019.

Hjalmarsson, 31, joined the Coyotes via a trade from the Chicago Blackhawks last summer and scored one goal and added eight assists in 48 games during his first season with the team.

A three-time Stanley Cup champion, Hjalmarsson was entering the final season of his current contract with a $4.1 million cap hit. Morgan said it's not yet known what the Swedish defenceman will make on his new deal.
