Toronto Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion wants a contract extension by Opening Day or else he will become a free agent at season's end, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com.

The 33-year-old will make $10 million in 2016, the final year of a four-year contract. Encarnacion hit .277 with 39 home runs and 111 RBIs in 2015 for the Blue Jays who won the AL East for the first time in over 20 years. The native of Dominican Republic was traded to Toronto from the Cincinnati Reds during the 2009 season and has been an integral part of the Blue Jays' batting order ever since.

According to Bradford's sources, there would be "mutual interest" between Encarnacion and the Boston Red Sox to work out a contract with each other next winter if an extension with the Jays is not reached.

Jose Bautista will also become a free-agent after the 2016 season if not signed to an extension.
