San Francisco Giants executives are in Los Angeles to meet with representatives for Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Rosenthal notes that it is unclear at the moment if there is a deal in place, but Stanton would have to waive his no-trade clause to accept a deal out of South Florida. The meeting does not indicate that a deal is close considering Stanton has full veto power, Rosenthal tweets.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the belief is that the Giants are willing to take on a significant portion of Stanton’s $295 million contract, if not all of it.

There has been speculation that Stanton – who grew up in the Los Angeles Area – wants to play on the West Coast. Rosenthal reported that he gave the Marlins a list of preferred destinations last week, but it isn’t publicly known what teams Stanton prefers.

The Miami Herald reported earlier this week that the Marlins would be willing to keep Stanton – who indicated that he does not want to be part of a rebuild – and trade other Marlins stars in an effort to reduce payroll. Multiple reports indicate that the new Marlins ownership wants to cut payroll to approximately $90 million, far lower than last year’s total of roughly $120 million.

Getting some of the remaining $295 million on Stanton’s deal off the books could go a long way toward making that happen. Stanton’s contract sees a significant jump in salary from $14 million in 2017 to $25 million for the coming season.

Stanton had the best year of his career last year, hitting 59 home runs and knocking in 132 runs on the way to capturing his first National League MVP Award.

He will turn 29 next November and isn’t scheduled to become a free agent until the 2029 season with a $10 million buyout for the 2028 season.
