The Athletic's Jared Weiss reports that Dwight Howard has negotiated a buyout from the Brooklyn Nets and will sign a one-year deal with the Washington Wizards on a mid-level exception.

An eight-time All-Star and four-time Defensive Player of the Year, Howard will be heading into his 15th NBA season.

He appeared in 81 games for the Charlotte Hornets - the team from which the Nets acquired the 32-year-old Atlanta native last month - last season, averaging 16.6 points, 12.5 boards and 1.6 blocks in 30.4 minutes a night.

Taken with the first overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft out of high school by the Orlando Magic, Howard has appeared in 1,035 career games with the Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks and Hornets. He has career averages of 17.4 points and 12.7 rebounds a game.

A spot at centre opened up for the Wizards when they dealt Marcin Gortat to the Los Angeles Clippers for Austin Rivers last week. On Monday, power forward Mike Scott joined Gortat with the Clippers as a free agent.
