Duron Carter will start at defensive back for the injured Nick Marshall Thursday against the Ottawa Redblacks, Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach Chris Jones confirmed on Tuesday.

Carter will play the game exclusively at defensive back, Jones added, with the 27-year-old not expected to see any time on offence.

Carter practiced at both defensive back and wide receiver at Roughriders' practice on Tuesday, but with Marshall injured, the team is short-handed on defence.

Marshall, who recorded a pick-six in his CFL debut for the Roughriders in Week 1, has been placed on the six-game injury list and is expected to have surgery on an injured finger.

Carter, who has been named an All-Star twice in career at receiver, also saw game reps at defensive back for Saskatchewan last season. Against the Calgary Stampeders in one of the Roughriders' final games of 2017, Carter picked off a pass from Stamps quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown.
