WASHINGTON - Nationals centre fielder Denard Span has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with left hip inflammation and may be out for the season.
The 31-year-old Span has already missed 52 games in two stints on the disabled list with back ailments.
He had just returned from the DL to play for Washington on Tuesday and Wednesday night, but was held out Thursday. After the game, manager Matt Williams said Span's back issues had re-surfaced and could end his season.
In 61 games, Span is batting .301 with five home runs and 22 RBIs. He'll be a free agent at the end of the season.
Washington recalled outfielder Matt den Dekker from Triple-A Syracuse.
