Tampa Bay Lightning centre Steven Stamkos has been fined $5,000 for a "dangerous trip" on Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Morgan Rielly during Tuesday's game, NHL Player Safety announced.

The fine is the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement.

The incident happened when Stamkos challenged Rielly along the boards, knocking him to the ice. He was handed a two-minute penalty, which the Lightning killed en route to a 4-3 win that saw the Leafs blow a three-goal lead. Stamkos registered one assist in 19:37 of ice time.

"He's not dirty, it's just what happens sometimes ... I'm not worried about it," Rielly said.

In 73 games so far this season, Stamkos has 27 goals and 58 assists.

Tampa will be back in action Thursday when they visit the Barclays Center in Brooklyn to take on the New York Islanders.
