The Calgary Stampeders announced Tuesday they have re-signed national linebacker Cory Greenwood.

Greenwood joined the Stampeders midway through the season last year and finished with two defensive tackles and five special teams tackles.

The 33-year-old is a veteran of 48 NFL games with the Kansas City Chiefs and 28 CFL games with the Stamps and Toronto Argonauts.

"Cory is a versatile and experienced player with the ability to contribute both on special teams and on defence," Stampeders GM John Hufnagel said in a team release. "He will get the opportunity to earn an important role as he enters his first full season with the club."

Greenwood was originally drafted by the Argos in 2010 but signed with the Chiefs in the NFL. He returned to the Argos in 2014 after three seasons south of the border.

Greenwood signed with the Edmonton Eskimos in 2017 but tore his ACL in training camp and never suited up for the team.

"I'm happy we got this deal done ahead of free agency," Greenwood said in the team release. "Alex Singleton and Jameer Thurman left some big shoes to fill and I wish them the best down south. With that said, I'm excited to return to Calgary and compete for a starting spot. In my few months I was with the team last season, I quickly realized how great the fans were and how much the city of Calgary had to offer."
