Toronto FC acquired forward Jon Bakero and $50 thousand in General Allocation Money from the Chicago Fire in exchange for midfielder Nicolas Hasler, the team announced on Friday.

“With this trade we acquire a forward in Jon Bakero who can provide us with some depth at that position while also clearing some cap space,” said Toronto FC General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “Jon was the MAC Hermann Trophy winner last year, an intelligent soccer player and is a solid prospect that we are happy to add to our club.”

Bakero appeared in four matches for the Fire, including making his pro debut against the LA Galaxy as a substitute on April 14.

The 21-year-old also played three matches with Tulsa Roughnecks FC of the USL and scored twice with one assist.

He was selected fifth overall in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft by the Fire out of Wake Forest.

Hasler appeared in 14 games this season for Toronto FC and contributed three assists.

“We want to thank Nico for his contributions to TFC over the past year,” said Bezbatchenko.  “He was an important contributor to our championship season last year and our run in the Champions League this year. On and off the field, Nico is a class act,”

He also played in 10 games in 2017 and scored three goals with one assist.
