Jack Armstrong returns with his thoughts on emerging Raptors star Pascal Siakam, DeAndre Ayton, Carmelo Anthony and more.

1. PASCAL SIAKAM (Raptors): It’s been fun to watch his emergence as a player the past few years. The game-winner he hit last night versus the Suns is another step in his development. Give him credit. He has surely earned it with his great work ethic. Siakam’s positive winning attitude and growing game can only be helped by his increased confidence level. It’s coming together for him and deservedly so.

2. DEANDRE AYTON (Suns): Thursday night was my first time seeing him in person and I was really impressed. Ayton runs well for a big man and is quite mobile. He has a good feel for operating in the paint and uses his size well. The Phoenix centre also has impressive hands and a high skill level. I think he’s going to be a good one.

3. ARON BAYNES (Celtics): What a difference he makes for their team. Tough and rugged, Baynes is an outstanding screener and physical defender. He makes sure you know he’s on the floor. The Celtics play with some juice and swagger when he’s on court. Baynes can also shoot the ball and gives you relentless effort on the backboards.

4. CARMELO ANTHONY: Sometimes you forget that he’s available and looking for a team. I’m sure something will develop in the coming weeks. Whatever team decides to take him in will have to know he’s willing to buy in to his role as a secondary piece. Obviously he still can score the ball but it’s got to be within the confines of the team structure, along with giving you a legitimate amount of effort on the defensive end. It will be an interesting partnership, to say the least.

5. DENNIS SMITH, JR. (Mavericks): It’s odd that he’s missed time with “back soreness” with rumors swirling that he wants to be traded. He’s an important young piece for their organization, but seems to have ended up disenchanted with his role and wants a new team. It’s always a tough spot for a team when their hands are being forced. Opposing teams circle and try to land the player at a discounted price. I’m sure Mark Cuban, Donnie Nelson and Rick Carlisle will do what’s best in the long term for their franchise and not be pushed around. Smith Jr. is a good young player who will garner plenty of interest.
