Striking Oil?

The Los Angeles Kings might have done the Edmonton Oilers a big solid on Wednesday afternoon.

In dealing a first-round pick and solid defensive prospect Roland McKeown to the Carolina Hurricanes for defenceman Andrej Sekera, The Edmonton Journal's Jim Matheson believes that the asking price for Oilers d-man Jeff Petry could rise significantly.

With Sekera and Cody Franson off the market, Petry and the Arizona Coyotes' Zbynek Michalek are arguably the two top rental defencemen available before Monday. Matheson believes that general manager Craig MacTavish could obtain a first-round pick and a prospect for the 27-year-old, up from the second-round selection believed to have been the previous asking price.

The Anaheim Ducks, Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens are among the clubs who could be in on Petry.

Keeping His Jacket On?

The Columbus Blue Jackets would like to trade defenceman James Wisniewski. The only problem with that is that it doesn't seem that the player is too interested in being moved.

The Columbus Dispatch's Aaron Portzline reports that the 31-year-old is making things as difficult as possible for general manager Jarmo Kekailanen to make a deal by modifying his 10-team no-trade list in such a way that the player can only be moved to teams who don't have the cap space or a glaring need for him. Teams who would be interested in Wisniewski have been precluded from making a deal. The request for Wisniewski to present a list to the club came on February 17.

“I haven’t really at any time wanted to be traded,” Wisniewski said on Wednesday. “I’ve always wanted to be a Columbus Blue Jacket. I love it here. As of right now, I’m a Columbus Blue Jacket. I’m here to win hockey games.”

Wisniewski was a healthy scratch on Sunday, but returned to the line-up in Tuesday's loss to the Buffalo Sabres.

“Sometimes, I guess it’s not good enough,” Wisniewski said of the benching. “They want to show that whoever’s not playing (well) is going to take a seat. If you’re not performing up to the standards every night, there’s another guy who will replace you."

Storm Quieted?

The Carolina Hurricanes were busy on Wednesday afternoon when they dealt forward Jiri Tlusty to the Winnipeg Jets and defenceman Andrej Sekera to the Los Angeles Kings, but that might be it for the club toiling at the bottom of the Metropolitan Division.

While general manager Ron Francis is likely to field more calls before Monday's deadline, The Raleigh News & Observer's Chip Alexander reports that he could be done trading.

Francis said that Tlusty and Sekera's contract status helped to precipitate the trade.

“We couldn’t get a deal done that we were comfortable with in terms of length and money,” Francis said of negotiations with the pair of pending unrestricted free agents. “We couldn’t just let them walk away. We had to get something in return and we're pleased with what we got.”

If Francis were to carry that mentality of getting something in return for players with expiring deals over the weekend and into Monday, both centre Jay McClement and defenceman Tim Gleason could be on the block.
