At age 40, former champion Fabricio Werdum continues to be a player in the heavyweight division after a unanimous decision victory over Marcin Tybura on Saturday at UFC Fight Night in Sydney, Australia.

While he likely needs another win before he gets another shot at the title, Werdum showed that even at his advanced age, he can still compete at a very high level.

This card was the longest in UFC history in terms of in-cage action for a 13-fight card, with more than three hours of cage time thanks in part to six straight decisions on the main card.

Elias Theodorou, the lone Canadian on the card, earned a unanimous decision victory over Dan Kelly after landing 118 strikes through three rounds, an incredible output for a middleweight.

Theodorou improved to 6-2 in the UFC.

Cyborg vs. Holm set for UFC 219

While it has not yet been named the main event, UFC 219 added a women’s featherweight title bout between champion Cris Cyborg and former bantamweight champion Holly Holm. The fight is arguably the best women’s MMA fight of all-time between two of the sport’s most decorated female strikers.

Holm fought in the inaugural featherweight title fight at UFC 208 and lost to Germaine de Randamie who later vacated the title.

Cyborg went on to capture the vacated title at UFC 214 when she defeated Tonya Evinger.

Holm is one of the most decorated female boxers ever and is best known in MMA for being the first fighter to defeat Ronda Rousey when she did so at UFC 193 in front of more than 55,000 fans in Melbourne, Australia.

Since then, Holm has hit a rough patch in her career, going 1-3 with losses to Miesha Tate, Valentina Shevchenko and the aforementioned de Randamie. She rebounded in June with a knockout victory over former bantamweight title challenger Bethe Correia.

Cyborg, meanwhile, has won 18 straight fights after losing her professional debut in 2005.

UFC 219 takes place on December 30 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Welterweight title fight between Woodley and Diaz being discussed

UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley said on his TMZ show Hollywood Beatdown that he had been offered and agreed to terms to defend his title against Nate Diaz at UFC 219.

While Woodley has signed his end of the agreement, Diaz still has yet to sign his and it’s uncertain if he will.

This matchup would certainly draw the ire of Woodley’s fellow welterweights as Diaz is unranked in the division and is 3-3 as a welterweight in the UFC.

Diaz has been fairly public about either wanting a trilogy fight against Conor McGregor or a large payday should he agree to return to the octagon.

Should this fight be agreed upon, it would likely headline UFC 219.

Werdum charged after throwing boomerang at Covington

In an incident that seemed like it would normally be reserved for a pro wrestling angle, welterweight Colby Covington, who was in Sydney as a guest fighter for UFC Fight Night, had a boomerang thrown at him by card headliner Werdum outside of the fighter hotel.

Many have speculated that the incident stemmed from Covington referring to Brazilians as “filthy animals” following his win over Demian Maia in Sao Paulo last month during his post-fight interview.

Covington pressed charges and Werdum was given a field court attendance notice by an officer that requires him to appear in court on Dec. 13.

An officer from the New South Wales Police Force told TSN that Werdum will likely be able to leave Australia unless his bail terms indicate otherwise, but that the court could issue a warrant for his arrest should he not show up in person for his hearing.

This is the second incident that the heavyweight Werdum has had with a smaller fighter after he exchanged words that included homophobic slurs in a foreign language during an altercation with interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson at a media event in Los Angeles prior to UFC 216. The UFC said that Werdum would do outreach in the LGBTQ community of Las Vegas as a result of the incident.

Covington was sent home by the UFC following the altercation.

Oezdemir arrested on aggravated battery charge

Volkan Oezdemir, who has been speculated to be facing Daniel Cormier for the light heavyweight title in early 2018 was arrested and charged with aggravated battery causing harm or disability stemming from an incident at a bar on Aug.12.

Oezdemir’s manager Frederic Englund released a statement saying:

“Volkan Oezdemir appeared in a Ft. Lauderdale, Florida courtroom Sunday morning in response to allegations from an incident in a Ft. Lauderdale bar on August 12, 2017. Mr. Oezdemir was accompanied by his attorney Bruce A. Zimet. Following a brief hearing (before) a Broward County Circuit judge, Mr. Oezdemir was granted a $10,000 bond during the pendency of his case. Mr. Zimet, a former federal prosecutor, described the incident that formed the basis of the case as nothing more than a bar room altercation in which Mr. Oezdemir, who was not the aggressor, was totally justified in all of his actions pursuant to Florida law.

“Mr. Oezdemir expressed his faith in the America judicial system and looks forward to all of the facts involved in the August 12, 2017 incident being made public. Mr. Oezdemir has full confidence that when the full picture is presented that he will be totally vindicated.”

Whether or not this jeopardizes Oezdemir’s title shot remains to be seen.
