Originally drafted by the Calgary Flames in the second round of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft out of the Western Hockey League's Kootenay Ice, Stoll is in his 13th NHL season. He has also spent time with the Edmonton Oilers and the past seven seasons with the Los Angeles Kings with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 2012 and 2014. His best offensive season came in 2005-06 with the Oilers, scoring 22 goals and adding 46 assists as the team reached the Stanley Cup Final.

On April 17, Stoll was arrested at a Las Vegas resort for possession of cocaine and MDMA. Felony charges were dismissed in a June plea deal and Stoll pleaded guilty to a pair of misdemeanours (one count of provoking commission of breach of peace and one count of trespass). He was sentenced to 32 hours of community service to be completed over a 120-day period.
