The attorney for Los Angeles Kings defenceman Slava Voynov says his client did not attack his girlfriend and claims police misunderstood her explanation because she does not speak English.

The attorney told TMZ Sports on Wednesday he spoke to his client's girlfriend through a Russian interpreter and "after this detailed interview, it became abundantly apparent to me that there was a misunderstanding by the police as to what actually occurred."

Voynov was suspended indefinitely by the NHL from all team activities after he was arrested on domestic violence charges Monday morning. He was taken to a local jail but was eventually released on $50,000 bail.

The attorney said Voynov's girlfriend is adamant she "fell down", explaining why neighbours heard her crying but police got the wrong impression when she tried to express that and arrested his client.

"It is my hope that when the police conclude their investigation, they will realize that there was no criminal activity on the behalf of Mr. Voynov," the attorney added.

"Charges are not warranted in this case. My client is also hopeful that the NHL will conclude its investigation promptly and will likewise allow him to join his team."
