The Montreal Alouettes have released quarterback Troy Smith, the 2006 Heisman Trophy winner.

Smith signed a two-year deal with the Alouettes before the 2013 season and started the last three regular season games of that campaign as well as the East Division Semifinal, which the Alouettes lost in overtime.

He was the Alouettes' starter for the first six games of the 2014 season before being placed on the six-game injured list.

During his time in Montreal, Smith completed 143 of his 288 passes for 1,873 yards with 13 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also rushed the ball 23 times for 96 yards and two scores.

Smith last played in the NFL in 2010 with the 49ers. He started six games that season and completed 50.3 percent of his passes for 1,176 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions.

Over four NFL seasons with the Ravens (2007-09) and 49ers, Smith completed 51.7 percent of his passes for 1,734 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions. He was selected by Baltimore in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft.
