The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed defenseman Mike Green ahead of free agency opening.

The 32-year-old scored 8 goals and added 25 assists over 66 games with the Detroit Red Wings in 2017-2018. However, Green’s season was cut short in March after it was announced that he would undergo neck surgery and would need at least two months to recover. The Calgary native missed seven games in February due to a neck injury, and re-aggravated it during a practice in March.

The 6-foot-1 defenseman was drafted by the Washington Capitals in 2004 as the 29th overall pick. After spending a decade with Washington, he signed with the Red Wings in summer of 2015.

Green saw his career bests during his time with the Caps, registering 31 goals and 73 points in 68 games in 2008-2009 and 76 points (19 goals) in 75 games in 2009-2010.

He’s coming off a three-year, $18 million contract.
