5:46pm et - Something to watch out for this evening - where will defenceman Tyson Barrie end up?
Ryan Rishaug noted last hour that the Edmonton Oilers could be interested in a short-term deal for the former Toronto Maple Leafs blueliner to rebuild his value after a disappointing season in Toronto.
Darren Dreger reported earlier that the Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks and Florida Panthers have all shown interest.
In 70 games with the Leafs last season, Barrie scored five goals and added 39 assists. He was acquired last summer from the Colorado Avalanche that saw centre Nazem Kadri head to Denver.
5:36pm et - There have been a flurry of minor moves over the past hour, including the Winnipeg Jets bolstering their defence.
Darren Dreger reports the team has re-signed Luca Sbisa to a one-year, $800,000 deal.
Sbisa, 30, appeared in 44 games for the club last season, scoring two goals and adding eight assists.
A former first-round pick, Sbisa is a veteran of 548 NHL games over 12 seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers, Anaheim Ducks, Vancouver Canucks, Vegas Golden Knights, New York Islanders and Jets.
4:40pm et - Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas admits that his team has interest in veteran free-agent defenceman Alex Pietrangelo.
Pietrangelo, 30, is from King City, Ont., just north of Toronto.
4:31pm et - Don't expect to see Taylor Hall back in Edmonton.
Ryan Rishaug reports that, despite local speculation, the Oilers will not be making a play for the former Hart Trophy winner because money considerations are unfeasible at the end of the day.
The Oiler took Hall with the first overall pick of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft out of the Ontario Hockey League's Windsor Spitfires. He played six seasons with the team before a 2016 trade to the New Jersey Devils for defenceman Adam Larsson.
4:08pm et - Jacob Markstrom is a member of the Calgary Flames.
Pierre LeBrun reports the former Vancouver Canucks goaltender has inked a six-year, $36 million deal with the team.
The 30-year-old recorded a .918 save percentage and 2.75 GAA with 23 wins in 43 appearances last season. Markstrom had a .919 save percentage and 2.85 GAA in 14 playoff games as the Canucks bowed out in seven games in the second round against the Vegas Golden Knights.
3:53pm et - Henrik Lundqvist isn't the only veteran addition to the Washington Capitals on Friday.
Darren Dreger reports defenceman Justin Schultz has agreed to a two-year deal with the club worth $8 million.
A two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Pittsburgh Penguins, the 30-year-old Schultz has played in 482 career games over eight seasons with the Pens and Edmonton Oilers.
3:39pm et - The Calgary Flames have added to their blue line.
Bob McKenzie confirms the signing of the Alexander Petrovic to a one-year, two-way deal.
Petrovic, 28, has 263 games of NHL experience over seven seasons with the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers.
3:10pm et - Another veteran blueliner is on the move.
The Anaheim Ducks have signed defenceman Kevin Shattenkirk to a three-year deal, reports Frank Seravalli.
Shattenkirk, 31, spent last season with the Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning, scoring eight goals and adding 26 assists in 70 games. The deal is worth $3.9 million per season.
3:01pm et - Mark Borowiecki has a new home.
The Nashville Predators announced the signing of the rugged defenceman to a two-year, $4 million deal.
Borowiecki, 31, appeared in 375 games over nine seasons with the Ottawa Senators.
3:00pm et - The biggest name available on the blue line is Alex Pietrangelo and we now know who he's been speaking to thus far.
Darren Dreger reports that the 30-year-old longtime St. Louis Blues defenceman has been in contact with both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vegas Golden Knights.
2:46pm et - Jack Johnson could be of interest to the Blueshirts.
Darren Dreger reports the veteran defenceman is in discussions with the New York Rangers following his buyout from the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Johnson, a 14-year vet, knows team president John Davidson from his time with the Columbus Blue Jackets and worked with assistant coach Jacques Martin with the Pens.
2:14pm et - Alexander Wennberg has found a new home.
A day after his buyout from the Columbus Blue Jackets, Darren Dreger reports the forward has agreed to a one-year, $2.25 million deal with the Florida Panthers.
The 26-year-old Stockholm native has appeared in 481 career games over six seasons, all with the Jackets.
2:07pm et - The Vancouver Canucks have already brought back Tyler Motte and will now look to retain one of its defencemen.
Darren Dreger reports the team continues to negotiate with rearguard Chris Tanev in an effort to keep him with the club.
The 30-year-old scored two goals and recorded 20 points in 69 games this past season. He had one goal and seven points in 17 playoff games as the Canucks were eliminated in the second round by the Vegas Golden Knights in seven games.
Tanev just played out the end of a five-year, $22.25 million deal.
1:57pm et - Matt Murray has a new deal with his new team.
Acquired last week from the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Ottawa Senators have inked the goalie to a four-year, $25 million extension.
The 26-year-old had a .899 save percentage and 2.87 GAA in 38 appearances with the Penguins last season. In three playoff games, Murray recorded a .914 save percentage and 2.50 GAA as Pittsburgh was eliminated in the playoff qualifying round by the Montreal Canadiens.
Murray backstopped the Penguins to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and 2017. He was a third-round pick (83rd overall) by Pittsburgh at the 2012 NHL Draft and made the NHL All-Rookie Team in 2017.
Murray was a restricted free agent and coming off a three-year, $11.25 million contract with an AAV of $3.75 million.
1:44pm et - Playoff hero Anton Khudobin looks to be extending his stay the Dallas Stars.
Frank Seravalli reports the team and the goaltender have agreed to a three-year, $10.5 million deal.
The 34-year-old recorded a .930 save percentage and 2.22 GAA in 30 appearances last season for the team. He had a .917 save percentage and 2.69 GAA in the playoffs as the Stars finished as runners-up to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
A seventh-round (206th overall) pick by the Minnesota Wild at the 2004 NHL Draft, Khudobin has stints with several NHL teams, including the Wild, Boston Bruins, Carolina Hurricanes, Anaheim Ducks and Stars.
He is coming off a two-year, $5 million contract.
1:38pm et - On top of the signings of Kyle Turris and Alan Quine, the Edmonton Oilers have also confirmed the signings of goaltender Anton Forsberg and forward Seth Griffith.
Forsberg, 27, is a veteran of 48 NHL games over five seasons with the Chicago Blackhawk, Columbus Blue Jackets and Carolina Hurricanes.
Griffith, 27, has appeared in 79 NHL games over four seasons with the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers and Buffalo Sabres.
1:24pm et - Just like his longtime teammate Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau is hoping to play again next season.
The Athletic's Kevin Kurz reports that the 41-year-old Marleau who split last season between the San Jose Sharks and Pittsburgh Penguins is working out in the San Jose area and could look to sign another one-year deal with the Sharks like he did last year.
Should Marleau return, it would be for his 23rd NHL season. Marleau trails Gordie Howe by 44 games for most played in NHL history at 1,723.
1:17pm et - Braden Holtby is on his way to the Vancouver Canucks on a two-year, $8.6 million deal.
The 31-year-old recorded a .918 save percentage and 2.75 GAA with 23 wins in 43 appearances last season with the Washington Capitals. Holtby had a .906 save percentage and 2.49 GAA in eight playoff games as the Capitals were eliminated in the first round in five games by the New York Islanders.
Drafted in the fourth round (93rd overall) by Washington at the 2008 NHL Draft, Holtby backstopped the Capitals to the franchise
He won the Vezina Trophy in 2016 and the William M. Jennings Trophy in 2017. Holtby has been named an NHL All-Star five times in his career and was named a First-Team All-Star in 2016. He won the World Cup of Hockey with Canada in 2016.
He is coming off a five-year, $30.5 million contract.
1:11pm et - Former New Jersey Devils centre Kevin Rooney is moving to Manhattan.
Pierre LeBrun reports the 27-year-old Rooney has signed a two-year, $1.5 million deal with the New York Rangers.
He had four goals and five assists in 49 games last season for the Devils.
1:08pm et - Even more from Alberta! Kyle Turris is headed to the Oilers.
The team confirmed a two-year deal for the veteran centre on Friday. Turris was bought out last week by the Nashville Predators.
Turris, 31, had nine goals and 22 assists last season for the Preds. A native of New Westminster, BC, Turris is heading into his 13th NHL season.
1:04pm et - Speaking of the Battle of Alberta, Alan Quine is switching sides.
Darren Dreger reports the 27-year-old winger has left the Calgary Flames and joined the Edmonton Oilers on a one-year, $750,000 deal.
He appeared in nine games for the Flames last season, scoring once.
1:00pm et - Cam Talbot is done with the Battle of Alberta and is heading south.
The former Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers goalie has signed with the Minnesota Wild, reports Frank Seravalli.
12:41pm et - Centre Carter Verhaeghe is staying in Florida, but not with the Lightning.
Darren Dreger reports the 25-year-old Toronto native has signed a two-year deal with the Panthers.
Verhaeghe had nine goals and four assists in 42 games for the Stanley Cup champions last season.
Bob McKenzie reports the deal carries an AAV of $1 million.
12:39pm et - Jon Merrill is headed to the Detroit Red Wings.
Frank Seravalli reports that the defenceman has signed a one-year, $900,000 with the club.
Merrill spent the past three seasons with the Vegas Golden Knights.
12:36pm et - The Bolts could be staying busy.
In addition to re-signing Patrick Maroon and Luke Schenn and waiving Tyler Johnson, Frank Seravalli reports the team is attempting to move defenceman Braydon Coburn.
That could be complicated by the fact that he has a no-trade clause. Coburn has one year and $1.4 million remaining on his current deal.
12:30pm et - Tyler Motte has a new deal with the Vancouver Canucks.
Rich Evans, the agent for the 25-year-old centre, says Motte has signed a two-year deal to stay with the club.
Motte had four goals and four assists in 44 games with the Canucks last season.
12:26pm et - A pair of Stanley Cup champions are staying with the champs.
Frank Seravalli reports the Tampa Bay Lightning have agreed to a two-year, $1.8 million deal with forward Patrick Maroon and have brought back defenceman Luke Schenn on a one-year, $800,000 deal.
12:15pm et - Bobby Ryan looks to be on his way to the Motor City.
The Athletic's Craig Custance reports the veteran forward is signing a one-year, $1 million deal with the Detroit Red Wings following his buyout last week from the Ottawa Senators.
12:09pm et - Tyler Johnson has been placed on waivers by the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Johnson, 30, has four years and $20 million remaining on a seven-year deal signed in 2017.
He had 14 goals and 17 assists in 61 games last season.
12:05pm et - Wayne Simmonds is headed home.
Pierre LeBrun reports the veteran power forward has signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal with his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs.
Simmonds had been given permission by the Buffalo Sabres to begin negotiations ahead of the market opening.
11:34am et - Barring the unforeseen, T.J. Brodie could be looking for a new home.
Bob McKenzie reports that the Calgary Flames and the 30-year-old defenceman's last-minute talks didn't produce a deal and Brodie will likely be heading to the open market.
A native of Chatham, Ont., Brodie is a veteran of 10 NHL seasons. In 64 games last season, Brodie had four goals and 15 assists.
11:17am et - Joe Thornton is no hurry.
The 41-year-old centre tells TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun that while he's intent on playing in a 23rd NHL season, he's not in any rush to make a decision. Currently in Switzerland, he told LeBrun that he might play in the Swiss A-League for a bit, as well. Thornton has appeared in 73 games for Davos HC over two stints earlier in his career during NHL work stoppages.
Thornton's 1,636 career games played are ninth-most in NHL history.
11:09am et - Victor Mete has a new deal.
The Montreal Canadiens announced a one-year, $735,000 deal for the 22-year-old defenceman.
A fourth-round pick in 2016, Mete appeared in 51 games for the Habs last season, scoring four goals and adding seven assists.
11:04am et - Malcolm Subban isn't going anywhere.
Despite the Chicago Blackhawks not qualifying the goaltender earlier this week, TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie reports he is expected to re-sign with the club on a two-year deal with an average annual value of just under $900,000.
McKenzie notes the team expects Subban to compete with Collin Delia and Kevin Lankinen for the starter's role with the departure of Corey Crawford.
10:45am et - Despite reports to the contrary, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic does not expect the Blue Jackets to be among the suitors for Alex Pietrangelo.
Portzline points to a third-line centre or top-six winger being the Blue Jackets' biggest need entering the day.
10:15am et - King Henrik is relocating to DC.
TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie reports that veteran goaltender Henrik Lundqvist is expected to a sign a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Washington Capitals. Lundqvist, 38, was bought out by the New York Rangers last week after 15 seasons with the team.
10:07am et- The Winnipeg Jets have acquired centre Paul Stastny from the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for a fourth-round pick in 2022 and Carl Dahlstrom, pending a trade call,
Stastny, who carries a $6.5 million cap hit through next season, posted 17 goals and 38 points in 71 games this past season. He added three goals and nine points in 18 games during the Return to Play.
The 34-year-old returns to the Jets after two seasons with the Golden Knights. He joined Winnipeg at the trade deadline in 2018 from the St. Louis Blues, posting four goals and 13 points in 19 games with the Jets and adding six goals and 15 points in 17 playoff games. He signed his current three-year deal with Vegas in July of that year.
A second-round pick of the Colorado Avalanche in 2005, Stastny has 250 goals and 726 points in 945 NHL games with the Golden Knights, Jets, Blues and Avalanche.
9:48am et - TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun expects Wayne Simmonds to be a hot commodity among Canadian teams today.
LeBrun expects Simmonds to receive offers from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens and possibly the Calgary Flames.
9:40am et - TSN's Ryan Rishaug reports the Oilers still don't have any more clarity on Oscar Kelfbom's injury ahead of the free agent market opening.
Rishaug adds the Oilers will likely need to add a defenceman, but without a timeline for his return, it could be tough to find the cap space.
The Oilers are also waiting on defenceman Oscar Klefbom to make a decision on his injured shoulder. General manager Ken Holland said last week Klefbom has been playing with pain every year and it's up to him to figure out what he wants to do moving forward. Holland said the Oilers are operating as though they likely won't have him for most or all of next season, admitting it's a bit tough to plan with the uncertainty.

Clearing Space
The Columbus Blue Jackets were the busiest team on Thursday, clearing close to $11.8 million with three moves.
The Blue Jackets traded Ryan Murray - who carries a $4.6 million cap hit - to the New Jersey Devils, sent Markus Nutivaara - under contract at a $2.7 million cap hit to the Florida Panthers and cleared $4.459 million by buying out centre Alex Wennberg.
Per CapFriendly, the Blue Jackets now have $14.2 million, but that could rise by additional $5.85 million if Brandon Dubinsky is placed on injured reserve.
The Blue Jackets do have five restricted free agents to sign, including Pierre-Luc Dubois, but TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun noted Thursday Columbus does have interest in Taylor Hall on the open market.
Krug Update
Torey Krug is expected to hit the open market today as TSN Senior Hockey Reporter Frank Seravalli reports the Boston Bruins have held firm on their offer at six years at $6.5 million per season.
Seravalli adds the Bruins have left the door open for Krug to circle back after weighing his options in free agency.
Krug is No. 3 on TSN's Top Free Agents list, behind Alex Pietrangelo and Taylor Hall.
Latest on Pietrangelo
Alex Pietrangelo appears set to test the open market today after failing to reach a contract extension with the St. Louis Blues.
The deadline for players to sign eight-year deals passed at midnight Thursday without a deal in place between the Blues and their captain, but TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun says the two sides have not yet closed the door on eachother.
Earlier on Thursday, LeBrun reported that Pietrangelo may make visits before signing with a new team, potentially delaying his decision by a number days.
" Alex Pietrangelo is ready to go to market as of late Thursday afternoon. That’s where the signs were," LeBrun said on Insider Trading. "I think everyone involved in the process is allowing the door open for another conversation. For now, however, certainly Pietrangelo is ready for that and he’s been ready for a couple of weeks. I think he if goes to market and there are teams that reach out that are willing to have him travel, he’s open to the idea of having some site visits before making up his mind. It could be that this is delayed for a couple of days and isn’t a one-day affair when it comes to where Pietrangelo lands. Some of the teams we believe will show interest in him include the Vegas Golden Knights – despite their salary cap issues – the Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs, but there will be others."
The 30-year-old scored a career-high 16 goals and 52 points in 70 games last season with the St. Louis Blues. He scored one goal and six points in nine playoff games as the Blues were eliminated in six games in the first round by the Vancouver Canucks.
