Jake Maier will be Redblacks’ Week 1 starter

Redblacks quarterback Jake Maier will start their season opener in Week 1 against the Elks, the team announced Thursday. The 29-year-old spent last season with the Roughriders as the backup to Trevor Harris and threw for 617 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in limited action.

CFL: Blue Bombers 27, Roughriders 31

Playing a CFL game in the Bridge City for the first time since 1991, the Roughriders beat the visiting Winnipeg Blue Bombers 31-27 in front of 7,654 fans at Griffiths Stadium, who erupted in the final minute after rookie quarterback Brayden Schager threw a three-yard touchdown pass to rookie receiver Daniel Wiebe with 42 seconds left in the game.

Taylor Powell went 13-14 for 160 yards and a touchdown, as the Elks knocked off the Lions in their first preseason game of the year.


CFL: Argonauts 20, Tiger-Cats 10

Chad Kelly returned to action for the first time in over a year and a half after recovering from a broken leg that saw him miss the entire 2025 season. He only played the first two drives and finished the game 3-7 with 29 yards passing and 24 yards on the ground.


Als QB Alexander pulled from preseason start for precautionary reasons

Montreal Alouettes quarterback Davis Alexander was pulled from his start in the team’s preseason opener against the Ottawa Redblacks on Friday after just two series, but TSN’s Farhan Lalji reports that it was for precautionary reasons and is expected to be ready for Week 1.
