Rookie Spencer Jones hit a towering two-run homer in the second inning that was upheld on replay, and the New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 on Friday night for their fifth straight victory. Alejandro Kirk had an RBI single in the fifth that extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

Willson Contreras hit a three-run home run and the Boston Red Sox held off the San Francisco Giants 6-4 on Friday night in the return of Rafael Devers to Fenway Park.


Fluharty to start as Blue Jays open series vs. Yankees in the Bronx

Mason Fluharty will get the start as the Toronto Blue Jays look to open their final series of the season against the rival New York Yankees with a win on Friday. It will mark a fourth start of the season for Fluharty, who has appeared in 64 games out of the bullpen.


MLB: Braves 1, Brewers 2

William Contreras had four hits and an RBI and Andrew Vaughn singled in the Brewers second run as Milwaukee did all their damage in the third inning. Jacob Misiorowski went six innings strong, allowing no runs on four hits and striking out six.


MLB: Nationals 0, Rangers 2

Jacob deGrom struck out 10 and allowed one hit and one walk in six innings while reaching 2,000 career strikeouts in the second-fewest games and innings in major league history as the Rangers beat the Nationals 2-0 on Thursday night.


MLB: Yankees 6, Orioles 1

Gerrit Cole pitched six sharp innings, Luis García Jr. and Spencer Jones homered and the Yankees completed a three-game sweep in Baltimore with a 6-1 victory over the Orioles on Thursday night.


MLB: Blue Jays 5, Rays 1

Kazuma Okamoto, Nathan Lukes and Daz Cameron homered, George Springer drove in two runs and Shane Bieber pitched seven strong innings as the Blue Jays beat the Rays on Thursday. Bieber allowed four hits, walked none and struck out seven for Toronto, which now has seven consecutive series wins.


MLB: Cardinals 10, Reds 9

Cincinnati's Dane Myers dropped a fly ball with two outs in the ninth, opening the flood gates in a six-run inning that gave the Cardinals a back-and-forth win over the Reds on Thursday. Jordan Walker hit a three-run home run and drove in another run on a ground out for St. Louis.


MLB: Giants 2, Guardians 5

Gavin Williams struck out 11 over 5 2/3 innings, José Ramírez had an RBI single in the three-run first and the Guardians beat the Giants for their first home series victory in seven weeks on Thursday. Williams fell one strikeout short of his career high, but moved into a tie for the AL lead with Toronto's Dylan Cease.


MLB: Mariners 4, Brewers 7

Garrett Mitchell and Gary Sánchez each hit two-run doubles during a six-run first inning, and the MLB-best Brewers beat the Mariners on Thursday. Mitchell also homered in the eighth, finishing 3 for 4 with three RBI as Milwaukee took two of three from Seattle.


MLB: Dodgers 6, Rockies 4 (10)

Mookie Betts homered and capped a three-hit night with an RBI single in the 10th inning, and the Dodgers beat the Rockies on Wednesday. Kiké Hernández also went deep and Kyle Tucker had two hits as Los Angeles completed a three-game sweep.


MLB: Giants 1, Guardians 0

Victor Bericoto had an RBI single, Canadian Matt Wilkinson worked two innings as an opener in his major league debut against the team that drafted the left-hander, and the Giants blanked the Guardians on Wednesday night. The 23-year-old Wilkinson faced seven batters and allowed one hit after being called up from Triple-A Sacramento.


MLB: Yankees 5, Orioles 3

Pete Alonso's drive down the left-field line in the seventh inning was ruled foul, and the Yankees took advantage of that reprieve, scoring twice in the top of the eighth to beat the Orioles on Wednesday night.


MLB: Blue Jays 6, Rays 7

Yandy Díaz hit a two-run homer, Drew Rasmussen earned his sixth consecutive win and Bryan Baker converted his 25th straight save opportunity to lead the Rays to a win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday night.


MLB: Diamondbacks 7, Red Sox 6 (10)

Nolan Arenado hit a tiebreaking broken-bat bloop single over a drawn-in infield to spark a two-run 10th inning, and the Diamondbacks avoided a series sweep by beating the Red Sox 7-6 on Wednesday.


MLB: Padres 2, Mets 4

Robert Stock allowed one run and struck out six in 4 1/3 innings, Carson Benge hit a two-run homer to conclude an impressive series, and the Mets beat the Padres on Wednesday. Benge became the first Mets rookie with at least 15 homers and 15 steals since fellow right fielder Darryl Strawberry in 1983.


MLB: White Sox 3, Cubs 0

Chicago relievers Jose Urquidy, Sean Newcomb and Grant Taylor combined to two-hit the Cubs and lead the White Sox to a shutout victory to avoid the series sweep. Andrew Benintendi singled home the go-ahead run before Braden Montgomery put the game out of reach with a two-run double in the eighth inning.
