Gavin Williams struck out a career-high 13 and allowed just two singles in seven innings, leading the Guardians to a win over the Blue Jays in a matchup of teams in the thick of the AL wild-card race. Patrick Bailey, rookie Angel Genao and Angel Martinez all hit two-run homers for Cleveland, who is 11-4 since Aug. 12.

Blue Jays head to Cleveland for critical series in playoff push

With the sweep over the Mariners on the weekend, the Jays are now within a game and a half of the Cleveland Guardians (69-68) for the final AL wild-card spot. The Guardians are playing excellent baseball right now, and have won eight of their past 10 games. The Jays have won three straight, so both teams are ready for this big series.

Bryson Stott hit a homer, Aaron Nola provided another solid start on the mound and the Phillies finished a torrid August with a 2-1 victory over the Diamondbacks on Monday night. Three-time All-Star Ketel Marte made his return for the Diamondbacks, two weeks after he failed to show up for a game in Boston. He was the designated hitter, batted cleanup and was 1 for 3 at the plate with a single and a walk.


MLB: Brewers 3, Cubs 17

Alex Bregman hit three of Chicago's franchise-record nine home runs and the Cubs wrapped up their August power display with a 17-3 blowout of the Brewers on Monday night.


MLB: Mariners 8, Red Sox 9 (10)

Trevor Story drove in the winning run with a bases-loaded single in the 10th inning after Seattle walked the two batters before him intentionally, lifting the Red Sox to a 9-8 comeback victory over the Mariners on Monday night.


MLB: Athletics 1, Rangers 8

Jacob deGrom allowed a second-inning single in seven shutout innings while bouncing back from one of his worst major league starts, and the Rangers beat the Athletics 8-1 on Monday night.


MLB: Mets 3, Rays 2

Robert Stock pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning for his first major league win in seven years, Mark Vientos homered in his return from the injured list and the Mets beat the Rays 3-2 on Monday night.
