Logan O’Connor scored for the first time in more than a year, Scott Wedgewood stopped 24 shots in his first Stanley Cup playoffs start and the top-seeded Colorado Avalanche beat the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 in Game 1 on Sunday. COL leads series 1-0.


NHL: Bruins 3, Sabres 4

Mattias Samuelson scored with 3:24 left and Buffalo overcame a two-goal deficit in the final eight minutes to beat the Boston Bruins 4-3 on Sunday night in the Sabres’ first playoff game in 15 years. BUF leads series 1-0.


NHL: Canadiens 4, Lightning 3 (OT)

Juraj Slafkovsky scored his third power-play goal 1:22 into overtime and the Montreal Canadiens beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 in Game 1 of their first-round series on Sunday night. Slafkovsky fired a slap shot from the left circle that beat Andrei Vasilevskiy to the far side for the hat trick. MTL leads series 1-0.

Matt Boldy had two goals and an assist, Joel Ericksson Ek scored a pair of power-play goals and rookie goalie Jesper Wallstedt made 27 saves in his postseason debut to help the Wild thump the Stars in Game 1 of their Western Conference playoff series. MIN leads series 1-0.


NHL: Flyers 3, Penguins 2

Travis Sanheim scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period, and the Flyers announced their return to the playoffs with a win over the Penguins on Saturday night. Dan Vladar stopped 15 shots to pick up the first postseason win of his six-year career. PHI leads series 1-0.


NHL: Senators 0, Hurricanes 2

Logan Stankoven and Taylor Hall scored, and Frederik Andersen came through with a big third-period performance in net to help the Hurricanes blank the Senators on Saturday to open their first-round playoff series. CAR leads series 1-0.


Andersen outduels Ullmark to lift Hurricanes to Game 1 win

The Hurricanes were good against the Senators in Game 1, and Frederik Andersen was perfect, turning away all 22 shots he faced, earning Ultimate Performer Powered by Stihl honours for the opening day of the NHL playoffs.


Habs taking advantage of extra practice time as they dial in on slowing down Bolts

The Canadiens had three practice days in a row ahead of Game 1 of their series against the Lightning, and head coach Martin St. Louis joked they didn't know what to do with all the extra time. The Habs are trying to find the right balance between rest and work, and know that stopping Tampa Bay's rush offence is a key to the series.
