Habs looking to 'repair quick' after slow start to season

Sitting with a 1-1-1 record so far this season, the Canadiens admit that some of their turnovers and puck battles have hurt them. Understanding that it is still early, the Habs say that they are confident that they can get into the proper mindset to fix the things that have been hurting them.

Gavin McKenna's first career NHL goal sparked a big comeback win by the Leafs. "It was an important moment, and he came up big in an important moment," said coach Jim Hiller. "I like that." McKenna also picked up his first career assist on Tuesday. "I feel like he's got to be humming with confidence now," said William Nylander.

The Leafs rallied from 3-0 and 4-2 down to beat the Predators on Thursday and even their record before heading out on a challenging road trip. "I don't think any second we thought we were going to lose that game," said Gavin McKenna. "We were super confident. That's the way we got to play every single game."


'We had a little sleepover': McKenna appreciating mentorship from Matthews

Gavin McKenna has been leaning on fellow first overall picks John Tavares and Auston Matthews as he navigates his first NHL season. The 18-year-old is living with the Tavares family and revealed that Matthews invited him for a sleepover on Sunday. "Might have to have a weekly sleepover now," McKenna joked after scoring his first NHL goal on Tuesday night.

Auston Matthews produced four points, including the OT winner on Tuesday. "There were lots of players that played well, but I really felt something special from Auston," said coach Jim Hiller. "His will to win was pretty strong." Matthews played more than 25 minutes. "Tremendous," said linemate Jack Roslovic. "He [dragged] the team with him."


NHL: Golden Knights 6, Kraken 2

Victor Olofsson and Tomas Hertl scored two goals apiece, while Jack Eichel scored a goal and had three assists as the Golden Knights routed the Kraken. Carter Hart made 25 saves in the win.


NHL: Panthers 2, Kings 1

Matthew Tkachuk scored what would prove to be the game winner midway through the third period as the Panthers held on to beat the Kings. However, in the second period, Brad Marchand collided with Kings defenceman Brandt Clarke while driving to the Kings’ net and Clarke’s stick came into contact with Marchand’s face. Marchand also collided with teammate Brady Tkachuk and crashed into the boards. Marchand had to be helped off of the ice.


NHL: Blues 2, Blackhawks 4

Sam Rinzel and rookie Anton Frondell scored two minutes apart in the second period as the Blackhawks held on in their home opener for their first win of the season. Spencer Knight made 25 saves for Chicago, which had lost its first three games on the road while being outscored 15-5.


NHL: Senators 3, Red Wings 5

Dylan Larkin scored and picked up an assist in his season debut to drown out the boos and lead the Red Wings to victory over the Senators on Tuesday. Tim Stützle continued his strong start with a goal and an assist but Ottawa couldn't complete the comeback and fell for the first time this season.


NHL: Hurricanes 6, Canadiens 4

Taylor Hall scored twice, Sebastian Aho had a goal and two assists, and the Hurricanes held off the Canadiens to earn their second straight victory. Mark Jankowski, Eric Robinson and Jalen Chatfield had a goal and an assist each for Carolina, which handed the Habs their first loss in regulation to spoil Montreal's home opener.


NHL: Predators 4, Maple Leafs 5 (OT)

Auston Matthews scored the game-winning goal in overtime, Gavin McKenna had his first career NHL goal and an assist, and the Maple Leafs erased a three-goal deficit in a comeback win over the Predators. Matthews added three primary assists and William Nylander had a goal and two helpers for Toronto.


NHL: Islanders 2, Rangers 5

Alexis Lafreniere recorded his third career hat trick and Oliver Bjorkstrand added a pair of goals of his own as the Rangers took down the crosstown-rival Islanders.

NHL: Wild 2, Sabres 3 (OT)

Tage Thompson and Noah Ostlund tied the game by scoring six minutes apart in the third period before Owen Power scored 4:22 into overtime to give Buffalo the win.
