Shelton suffers Davis Cup defeat in first match since US Open final

U.S. Open finalist Ben Shelton struggled to dominate with his serve and was beaten 6-4, 6-4 by 24th-ranked Jiri Lehecka on Friday as the Czech Republic drew level 1-1 with the United States in the last qualifying round for the Davis Cup Final 8.

The two-time defending U.S. Open champion has been dethroned, losing to Elena Rybakina 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in the final on Saturday. Denied the chance to become the third women’s player to win the American Grand slam tournament three times in a row, Sabalenka beat herself up throughout the 2-hour, 21-minute ordeal that was filled with self-inflicted mistakes.

Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina will finish the Grand Slam season the way it started. The top two women in the world rankings meet Saturday in the U.S. Open final, where Sabalenka will try to become the first player to win three in a row since Serena Williams from 2012-14.
