ON his 40th birthday, Gael Monfils turned back the clock and pushed back the end of his Grand Slam career, beating Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0 at the U.S. Open. Monfils became the oldest man to win a U.S. Open match since Jimmy Connors defeated Jaime Oncins on Sept. 2, 1992, when he turned 40.

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka began her quest for a third US Open title with a hard-fought straight sets win over Anastasia Zakharova on Monday. Osaka, who won the title in New York in 2018 and 2020, was pushed to a tiebreak in both sets where she won the first-set tiebreak 8-6 and the second 7-3 to complete the victory.
