For years it was billed as a battle between brothers.
Tonight, the brothers will be teammates as Brady Tkachuk makes his highly anticipated return to Canadian Tire Centre when the Ottawa Senators host the Florida Panthers in the first of four meetings this season.
Brady and Matthew Tkachuk have gone from Atlantic Division rivals to two-thirds of the top line in Florida.
Meanwhile, the Senators are bracing for a showdown against their former captain in a game that hockey fans have had circled on their calendar since the summer.
Both teams enter tonight with 12 points in nine games.
The Panthers have done it without Aleksander Barkov, who is expected to return at some point in December.
Ottawa has done it without Tkachuk.
Tim Stutzle has led the way up front with 12 points.
Linus Ullmark is 6-1-0 with a .945 save percentage.
The Senators won’t have Thomas Chabot or William Eklund in the lineup due to injuries, but they will get a key piece back tonight as Jake Sanderson returns.
What can we expect in tonight’s Atlantic showdown?
Let’s set the stage and lock in a FanDuel Best Bet for Ottawa versus Florida in this Morning Coffee column for Wednesday October 21st, 2026.
Can Senators Spoil Brady Tkachuk’s Return To Ottawa?
The Senators lead the NHL with 10 different defencemen making an appearance in their first nine games.
Chabot played north of 27 minutes in five of seven games before suffering an upper-body injury that is expected to sideline him for a few games.
Sanderson, who registered 54 points in 67 games last season, logged just 4:29 in Ottawa’s season opener before missing eight games.
The Senators can’t afford any more injuries.
With tensions high amidst Tkachuk’s return to Ottawa, I’m looking forward to seeing how both teams respond.
Florida has won three in a row heading into a four-game road trip that features stops in Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Winnipeg this week.
The Panthers will follow up a home-and-home against the Jets with a home date against the Detroit Red Wings.
Naturally, the Tkachuk trade will be a major talking point as we await word on what’s next for Connor Hellebuyck and Dylan Larkin in the coming days and weeks.
Hellebuyck’s team-imposed suspension is set to end this Friday.
Larkin reportedly submitted an updated trade list to the Red Wings that features seven options that were not a part of his initial request.
Whether the Jets or Red Wings can get a better package for either player now compared to what was available to them before the regular season started is one issue.
The other is the long-term impact the situations will have on both franchises beyond any potential trade resolution.
Winnipeg has lost three in a row as its strength of schedule ramps up and is +210 to make the playoffs at FanDuel – a 32.3 per cent implied probability.
Detroit has secured at least a point in five straight games but is +520 to make the playoffs – longer odds than any NHL team outside of the Chicago Blackhawks, Vancouver Canucks, and the Calgary Flames.
Meanwhile, Ottawa is -192 to make the playoffs at FanDuel this morning – a 65.8 per cent implied chance.
The Senators have planned a video tribute, contingencies are in place if any jerseys are thrown on the ice, and with four head-to-head meetings this season there is plenty of time for hostilities to ramp up between the two teams.
The top priority for Ottawa is still locking up two points.
FanDuel made this game a pick’em with both sides -110.
The total is set at 5.5 goals, and it’s slightly juiced to the over at -122.
Brady to score the first goal tonight is 10-to-1 at FanDuel – the shortest odds of any player on either team.
Stutzle has the shortest odds to register 1+ point at -205, followed by Matthew Tkachuk at -200 and Brady at -186.
Sanderson to record one or more points is -128.
As for a FanDuel Best Bet, this could be a sneaky good spot for a couple of players flying under the radar.
Anton Lundell has averaged 2.8 shots on goal on 4.9 attempts per game this season.
He hasn’t gone back-to-back games without two or more shots on goal, but he had just one on two attempts in Florida’s 8-3 win over the Seattle Kraken on Saturday.
Ottawa has allowed an average of 7.8 shots on goal per game to opposing centres this season – the second-highest mark in the NHL behind the Minnesota Wild.
Lundell has cleared 2+ shots on goal in four of five games against the Senators the last two seasons and could be a good bet to hit that mark again at -118 at FanDuel.
Meanwhile, Sam Bennett will line up as the centre on Florida’s top line between the Tkachuk brothers.
After registering an assist in three straight games in early October, Bennett didn’t record a point in four straight games before netting a hat-trick in the win over Seattle.
Bennett only played 12:25 as the Panthers cruised to the lopsided win, but he should see more ice time and plenty of opportunities skating with the Tkachuk’s tonight.
What’s your prediction for tonight’s game?
Hit me up @Domenic_Padula on X and let me know your thoughts.
Sens versus Panthers used to be Brady versus Matthew.
Tonight, it’s the Tkachuk brothers versus Ottawa in one of the most highly anticipated early season matchups on the schedule.
Enjoy the game, everyone!
