The San Francisco 49ers are the Super Bowl favourite at FanDuel following their second 5-0 start in four seasons.
Kyle Shanahan is the favourite to win the AP NFL Coach of the Year award at +340 at FanDuel.
Brock Purdy is the second choice to win MVP at +250.
The 49ers have one of the league’s best coaches, best quarterbacks, and a defence that seems vastly improved under new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, who won’t get the credit he deserves for the team’s hot start.
The biggest question left is sustainability after Mike Evans joined a long list of injuries in a 23-17 win over the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football.
On the topic of sustainability, October mornings in Toronto were supposed to feature temperature drops, jackets, and the usual extra cup of coffee or two.
Instead, we hit a high of 21 degrees Celsius on Monday.
If we’re lucky, we could be in for some more warm weather this week, even if some can’t wait for the winter weather to inevitably arrive.
Speaking of warm weather, our lead web producer Luke Bellus was in LA over the weekend and was kind enough to remind me why a trip to the west coast is overdue.
Los Angeles has the sunshine, the ocean, but there’s also something it is missing this October: a contender.
The LA sports scene feels less city of champions and more like a studio full of abandoned projects right now.
Which LA team deserves the title of biggest bust?
Let’s go back to the futures and break down the numbers in this Morning Coffee for Tuesday October 20th, 2026.
Handing Out The Award For Biggest Bust In LA Sports
After back-to-back World Series titles, the Los Angeles Dodgers entered the 2026 MLB season as the obvious favourite to win it all again at +210 at FanDuel.
LA was +220 to three-peat at the start of the postseason.
Two weeks later, the Dodgers were swept by the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLCS.
LA’s three-peat never made it past the second act.
It was the Godfather Part III, although that’s probably a conversation we should save for another morning.
Then there’s the Los Angeles Kings, which couldn’t get out of town soon enough following their terrible start.
One night after the Dodgers were swept, the Kings lost to the Boston Bruins to fall to 0-4-2 as the last remaining winless team in the entire NHL.
While expectations for the Kings weren’t nearly as high as some of LA’s other sports franchises, they were still -215 to make the playoffs – a 68.3 per cent implied chance.
LA is +112 to make the playoffs at FanDuel this morning.
The Kings are +132 to pick up their first win of the season on the road tonight against the Washington Capitals.
Next up, we have LA’s NBA franchises.
The Clippers have the fourth-lowest regular season win total in the association at 27.5.
With Kawhi Leonard in Toronto, the Clippers look like the low-budget, mid-season replacement series nobody is interested in paying the subscription fees to watch.
Luka Doncic and the Lakers are -425 to make the playoffs, but they’re no longer the perennial top 10 choice to win the NBA championship that made them must-see TV.
There’s a long list of nominees for the biggest bust in LA, but the city’s NFL franchises are the obvious favourites.
The Rams were billed as the fall’s biggest blockbuster.
Instead, Sean McVay’s side just ended up on the wrong side of the biggest upset of the NFL season to date, and the early reviews are terrible.
The Rams are stuck in the NFC West basement with a long list of injuries that include Myles Garrett, Davante Adams, Poona Ford, and Kobie Turner.
Plus, they just can’t seem to find a decent kicker.
The good news is that the Rams still have enough good actors to carry the potential redemption arc if they can clean up their mistakes and avoid any more serious injuries the rest of the way.
LA is still -110 to make the playoffs at FanDuel.
First, they must stop the slide against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7.
Then in Week 8, the Rams face off with their LA rival, who will still be looking for their first win of the season.
The Chargers enter their bye week at 0-6 as one of two remaining winless teams in the NFL.
The hype behind Jim Harbaugh’s side was substantial, but it turns out they never even made it to opening night.
A legitimate franchise quarterback, upgrades on both sides of the football, and a high-profile offensive coordinator hire were supposed to unlock the Chargers full potential following back-to-back 11-win seasons.
Instead, they completely crashed at the box office.
Following a 22-6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, Harbaugh told reporters the team needs to “reevaluate every part of what we’re doing.”
Justin Herbert has been sacked 21 times, he’s thrown eight interceptions with only five touchdowns, and the Chargers have scored more than 17 points only once.
Injuries have made a turnaround that much more complicated, and things could get a lot worse before they get better after the bye week.
Yes, the Rams have underperformed relative to the highest possible expectations.
The Chargers have underperformed by any measure.
In a city that for decades measured success by whether the lights come on, and people show up to watch, the Bolts are still looking for the button that turns on the projector.
Now if they find a way to win in Week 8, it will be at the expense of LA’s last remaining hope at a Super Bowl.
The Rams were the obvious Super Bowl favourite and as bad as things have gone through the first few acts, they still have a shot to turn things around.
Unfortunately, the Chargers season is already over, which is why they get the award for LA’s biggest bust.
It wasn’t that long ago that football fans debated which LA team had the better shot to play in the Super Bowl at SoFi Stadium in February.
Instead, it’s more likely than not that the Rams and Chargers will spend Valentines Day 2027 watching two other teams play in the biggest game of the year.
