Alouettes bring back Canadian kicker Ward

Published:

The Montreal Alouettes announced that national kicker Lewis Ward has returned to the team. The 33-year-old joined the Alouettes for a few weeks in mid-June.

The move comes after Global kicker Jose Maltos Diaz was carted off after a left wrist/arm injury in the team’s 16-12 Week 20 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Ward spent eight seasons with the Ottawa REDBLACKS (2018-2026). In 2026, he played two games with Ottawa and made two field goals.

The 5-foot-5, 172-pounnd kicker played 119 games over eight seasons in Ottawa, making 302 of his 349 field-goal attempts for an 86.5 per cent success rate.

The Royal Leamington Spa native (England) played university football with the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees.

In 2018, he was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player. That same season, Ward earned CFL All-Star and East Division All-Star honours after making 51-of-52 field-goal attempts (98.1 per cent), including a career-long 52-yarder.

Ward also set a professional football record by making 69 consecutive field-goal attempts during the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

The Alouettes also announced that they have released American wide receiver Arkell Smith (Central Missouri) and American running back Marcus Major Jr. (Minnesota).
